Sarah Vieweg is a doctoral candidate in the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) Institute at the University of Colorado. The ATLAS Institute serves as an entrepreneurial catalyst and incubator for innovative interdisciplinary research. A unique aspect of ATLAS is its bridging role between information and communication technology (ICT), and disciplines and communities that are not typically closely partnered with ICT.
Sarah's research interests focus on various dimensions of human-computer interaction (HCI) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). As a researcher in Leysia Palen's ConnectivIT Lab, Sarah investigates the use of computer-mediated communication in disasters and crises, with an eye towards how people gather and distribute information in time- and safety-critical situations. Sarah holds an MA in linguistics, and is ABD in Technology, Media and Society. She uses ethnographic, discourse analytic and user-centered design methods to understand behavior in both online and offline settings, with a focus on developing intuitive technologies that help users locate and organize useful, personally meaningful information.
